One of the best things about staying in Shipston-on-Stour is its location. Sitting right on the northern gateway to the Cotswolds, you are surrounded by some of the most beautiful villages, countryside, and historic towns in England.

The Cotswolds

Chipping Campden (15 mins by car)

One of the prettiest market towns in the Cotswolds, famous for its historic high street, honey-coloured stone buildings, independent shops, and cosy cafés.

Broadway (20 – 25 mins by car)

Often called the “Jewel of the Cotswolds,” Broadway is a beautiful village filled with boutique shops, galleries, restaurants, and traditional inns.

Moreton-in-Marsh (10 – 15 mins by car)

A lovely market town with direct train services to London Paddington, taking approximately 1½ hours. Ideal if you’re travelling into London during your stay.

Just outside Moreton-in-Marsh is the stunning Batsford Arboretum — a beautiful arboretum and gardens that are well worth a visit, especially in spring and autumn.

Stow-on-the-Wold (20 to 25 mins by car)

A classic Cotswold hill town with antique shops, tea rooms, traditional pubs, and charming narrow streets.

South of Shipston

Long Compton (10 mins by car or bus)

A beautiful village known for its dark skies and excellent stargazing opportunities. Long Compton is recognised as one of England’s designated dark sky areas, making it ideal for clear-night countryside views.

Chipping Norton (20 mins by car or bus)

A bustling Cotswold market town with independent shops, cafés, pubs, and plenty of local character.

Nearby you’ll find the famous Diddly Squat Farm Shop from Clarkson’s Farm, which has become a popular visitor attraction.

Burford (35 mins by car)

A truly beautiful Cotswold town with steep historic streets, traditional shops, cafés, and stunning architecture.

Cotswold Wildlife Park (45 mins by car) 

Located near Burford and approximately 45 minutes’ drive from Shipston, the wildlife park is a fantastic family day out with animals, gardens, and open parkland.

Oxford (40+ mins by car)

One of the most famous university cities in the world, full of history, architecture, museums, colleges, shops, and restaurants.

Please note that Oxford operates emissions and traffic restrictions in certain areas. It is highly recommended to use one of the city’s Park & Ride services rather than driving into the centre.

East of Shipston

Banbury (30 mins by car)

Located around 15 miles east of Shipston. The surrounding countryside and villages are lovely to explore, although there are generally nicer places to visit than Banbury town centre itself.

North of Shipston

Stratford-upon-Avon (15+ mins by car)

Just 9 miles north of Shipston, Stratford-upon-Avon is world-famous as the birthplace of Shakespeare. You’ll find theatres, historic buildings, museums, river walks, restaurants, and many attractions linked to Shakespeare’s life and works.

It can become extremely busy during weekends and bank holidays, but it remains one of the most beautiful and historic towns in the area.


Shipston-on-Stour truly is the perfect base for exploring the Cotswolds and the surrounding countryside. Whether you’re looking for picturesque villages, countryside walks, historic towns, cosy pubs, or family attractions, there’s something nearby for everyone to enjoy.

A Few More Places Worth Exploring

If you’re happy to venture a little further afield, there are even more fantastic places to visit during your stay.

Bibury

Often described as one of the most beautiful villages in England, Bibury is famous for its idyllic stone cottages, river, and postcard-perfect scenery. Arlington Row is particularly well known and one of the most photographed spots in the Cotswolds.

Cotswold Airport

A surprisingly interesting visit for aviation enthusiasts. The airport is home to a number of historic aircraft, and depending on what is visiting or stored there at the time, you may even spot one of the last remaining Boeing 747 aircraft up close. or just 20 mins away is Wellesbourne Mountford Airfield Perfect for aviation lovers and only a short drive away. The airfield regularly has light aircraft activity, flying schools, and occasional aviation events. A great place to relax with a coffee and a full English Greasy Spoon cafe while watching planes come and go.

The Broadway Museum and Art Gallery & Steam Railway Connections

For railway enthusiasts, the nearby Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway offers beautiful heritage steam train journeys through the Cotswolds countryside. Stations including Broadway and Toddington are particularly lovely.

Didcot Railway Centre 

Reachable via train connections from Moreton-in-Marsh, this is a fantastic day out for railway fans, featuring historic locomotives, railway memorabilia, and restored Great Western Railway buildings.

Dover’s Hill (17 mins by car)

Just above Chipping Campden, Dover’s Hill offers stunning panoramic views across the surrounding countryside and is especially beautiful at sunset. It’s also famous for hosting the traditional Cotswold Olimpicks.

Broadway Tower (20 mins by car)

One of the most iconic landmarks in the Cotswolds. The tower sits high above Broadway with incredible views across multiple counties on a clear day.

Blenheim Palace (30 mins by car)

A little further away, but absolutely worth the visit. This magnificent stately home and UNESCO World Heritage Site is the birthplace of Winston Churchill and offers spectacular gardens, grounds, and events throughout the year.

Hidcote Manor Garden (15 mins by car)

One of England’s most famous arts-and-crafts gardens, filled with beautifully designed outdoor spaces, walking paths, and seasonal colour.

Bourton-on-the-Water (25 mins by car)

Known as the “Venice of the Cotswolds,” this is another extremely popular village with low bridges crossing the river, tea rooms, shops, and family attractions.

More Local Gems & Hidden Finds

Diddly Squat Farm Shop

Made famous by Clarkson’s Farm, Diddly Squat has become one of the area’s biggest attractions. If you’re planning to visit, the clue may well be in the name — expect queues, crowds, traffic, and very busy weekends! Still, it’s a fun stop if you’re a fan of the series or fancy seeing it for yourself.

Cotswolds Distillery

If gin or whisky is your thing, the Cotswolds Distillery is less than a 15-minute drive away and highly recommended. They offer tours, tastings, and have an excellent shop and café on site.

Whichford Pottery

Just down the road from the distillery, Whichford Pottery is a lovely place to visit with beautiful handcrafted pottery, gardens, and a very nice café. Opening times can be a little unusual though, so it’s worth checking ahead before travelling.

The Herd Restaurant

Located just a 5-minute drive south of Shipston, The Herd is becoming increasingly popular locally and has plenty of people talking about it. A great option if you’re looking for somewhere a little different to eat.

Ilmington

Just a short 6-minute drive away, Ilmington is home to the highest point in Warwickshire and offers some truly stunning countryside views.

The Howard Arms

A very good traditional village pub with excellent food and a lovely atmosphere — perfect after a countryside walk.

Foxcote Hill

The views from Foxcote Hill are absolutely incredible, especially on a clear evening or at sunset. A fantastic spot for photography, walking, or simply taking in the scenery.

Vegetables Matter

A brilliant local farm shop around 10 minutes away, offering fresh produce, local goods, and a very pleasant café — ideal for breakfast, lunch, or picking up local ingredients during your stay.
